Say you live in Ohio and you want to test drive a lot of cars and trucks all at one time but you don’t want to drive around town burning up your precious fuel — even with the low gas prices.

Well here’s a hack — go to the 2016 Cleveland Auto Show.

One of the biggest “new car” shows in Ohio, each year the manufacturers not only bring the hottest new products just revealed in Detroit and Chicago and put them on display, they also bring this year’s cars for show goers to drive and drive and drive.

Floor plan of the 2016 Cleveland Auto Show

Again this year, Chevrolet, Ford, Kia, Subaru, Mazda and Toyota, as well as all of FCA, including Ram, Dodge, Fiat, Chrysler and Jeep, will have their 2016 cars and trucks lined up around the IX Center in Cleveland, Ohio with product specialists ready to hand you the keys.

Once you’re done burning up their fuel around town, go on to the floor and see the new 2017s and the concepts, like some of our favorites — the Acura Precision Concept, Lincoln Continental, Chrysler Pacifica, Cadillac XT5, Mercedes SLC300, and Lexus LC 500 — just to name a few. You can also hit the Jeep and Ram inside test tracks. The Jeep track has been updated with new, more extreme conditions for the off-road simulation course. Our team had a chance to experience the updated course at the Chicago Auto Show in both the 2016 Renegade and Wrangler Rubicon.

The show runs from Feb. 27 – March 6. Cost for adults is $13.00. Pre-teen and senior are  $11.00, and kids are free. Go to http://www.clevelandautoshow.com for more information about the show.

As far as luxury SUVs go, the Acura MDX stands out in the crowd, especially for its value (starting at $43,015 MSRP). U.S. News & World Report named it the 2016 Best Luxury 3-Row SUV for the Money — for the fourth consecutive year. Although the front-end grille sparks a “love it or hate it” debate, sales have been strong enough — exceeding 50,000 units in each of the past three years — to make it the second best selling luxury SUV on the market.

Acura and Honda, however, aren’t resting on their laurels. To bring the MDX in line with the new brand DNA, the Precision Crafted Performance strategy, Acura announced today that it will unveil the all-new, redesigned and reengineered, 2017 Acura MDX at the 2016 New York International Auto Show on March 23.

“We are sharpening our focus on the Precision Crafted Performance DNA of the Acura brand and the 2017 MDX will integrate new styling elements and powertrain technology that takes us another step in that direction,” said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc.

Javi in the Jeep stand at the Chicago Auto Show

ASG Intern, Javi Irizarry, in the Jeep stand at the 2016 Chicago Auto Show

The Chicago Auto Show is one of our favorites — from the size, luxury brands, reveals, test tracks, the city and more, — and the 2016 show didn’t disappoint. Each year we invite a young person to experience and cover the show during press days and this year we had an 18-year old from Orlando, Florida — Javi Irizarry — join us on the team. We put a camera in his hands, and he never stopped shooting.

The cold weather was a shock, but Javi says he mostly enjoyed the snow shower on the final day of the trip. Here are just a few images from the press days, through the eyes of our 2016 intern.

Ram Truck unveils the all-new Ram Power Wagon during the first press day of the 2016 Chicago Auto Show. The world’s first and most capable off-road truck gets new design inside and out. It has 17-inch wheels, 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires, standard 6,4-liter HEMI V-8 with 410 hp and 429 lb.-ft. of torque, a 12,000-lb. winch in the front grille to pull others out of the mud and 10,030-lb. towing capacity. But most importantly, the suspension system allows for great off-roading. Here are more photos of the new Ram truck. Video by Jonathan Morales.DSC_0170

Auto Show Global’s 2016 Chicago Auto Show Pre-show Rundown

By Karla Thornhill Coleman, Auto Show Global       February 9, 2016  5:06 p.m.

Auto Show Global is Chi-town bound for the 2016 Chicago Auto Show, starting with press days, Feb. 11-12 and the public days from Feb. 13-21.

It’s the largest auto show in the country with more than a million square feet of show floor, two huge halls and more at the beautiful McCormick Place in Chicago, Illinois. There’s been some shuffling around of display space, promises and rumors of new vehicle debuts, some “already debuted in Detroit” stuff, and luxury brands that snubbed Detroit but will show up big in Chicago. So stay focused. Here we go with the ASG Chicago Auto Show Pre-show Rundown:

Show floor shakeup

According to the show coordinators, only three manufacturers — FCA, Toyota and Ford — have the same display location as last year. A new trend, which started in Detroit this year, the premium brands are now grouped close together — and let the competitive sparks fly. Look for luxury on the west side of South Hall, while the volume brands are located in the North Hall and all the test tracks will be side to side on the east end of South Hall.

“Exhibitors who weren’t already near competitors wanted to be closer to their competition,” said Dave Sloan, Chicago Auto Show general manager. “This gave us the opportunity to group our three extremely popular test tracks in one area and make it easier for our attendees to cross-shop vehicles.”

  • Chevrolet Camaro 1LE
  • Updated Ram heavy-duty pickup (not saying any more)
  • Refreshed Hyundai Santa Fe crossover
  • Ford Explorer crossover special edition
  • All-new Nissan (not saying any more)
  • New 2016 Chrysler 200S and 300S alloy editions
  • Toyota Tacoma midsize pickup
  • Refreshed Chevrolet Trax subcompact crossover
  • Kia Niro hybrid crossover — production version
  • Mercedes-Benz Sprinter-based concept

If you missed me in Detroit…

Several of our favorites from the 2016 North American International Auto Show in Detroit last month will be making their Chicago debut at the show, including the Acura Precision Concept, 2017 Lincoln Continental, 2017 Lexus LC 500, 2017 Chrysler Pacifica, 2017 Cadillac XT5, Volvo S90, 2017 Mercedes-Benz SL and more.

Luxury that snubbed Detroit gives Chicago big love
Jaquar Land Rover, Rolls Royce and Bentley were all MIA at the Detroit Auto Show this year, but these luxury brands plan to show up strong for Chicago’s luxury buyers.

Jaguar Land Rover will showcase more than 10 vehicles at the show, including the brand’s two newest offerings which go on sale later this year – the new 2017 Jaguar XE compact sports sedan and the first-ever Jaguar SUV, the 2017 Jaguar F-PACE, revealed at the 2015 Frankfurt Auto Show.

The recently redesigned XF mid-size luxury sedan, full-size Jaguar XJ and F-TYPE sports car will be there too. And along side the Jags will be the Land Rover brand with the new 2017 Range Rover Evoque Convertible on display, which had its worldwide debut at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show. Land Rover will also have the rest of its line-up: the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Evoque, Land Rover Discovery Sport and Land Rover LR4.

Bentley will have the 2017 Bentley Bentayga, as well as the Bentley Continental GTC and the Bentley Mulsanne on display and Rolls-Royce will show its Ghost Series II, Phantom Drophead Coupe and the Wraith. All this added luxury will certainly spice things up on the west end of South Hall.
